Hurricane Preparedness

Though the weather in South Florida is a major attraction for business activity and personal quality-of-life, we do face the hurricane facts of life. At the outset, please consider the reality that, though hurricanes do occasionally hit the southeastern Florida peninsula, the fact is that direct hits are not commonplace.

That said, we must urge that people be aware that significant personal and property damages can result. These storms can be very dangerous and preparedness is crucial. We are fortunate that, unlike certain types of natural catastrophes, arrival of a hurricane is typically well forecast ahead of any strike-there is time be prepared!.

While the statistical probabilities are quite small for a major event, residents and visitors are urged to follow caution as if the odds were much higher. It is simply not worth the gamble of acting otherwise.

Many publications and websites are available at no cost. For example, you can reach the Palm Beach County emergency operations center, www.pbcgov.com/pubsafety/eoc. You may also pick up copies of the County's Hurricane Preparedness publication at area libraries. Other hurricane preparedness books published by major media sources may be picked up at major grocery stores and public buildings.
